QUINTESSENCE
Château Mangot

Saint-Émilion Grand Cru
When complexity meets finesse…

Created in 1996 from a new plot selection, this cuvée is a pure expression of our oldest Merlot growing in limestone soil.

Situated at an altitude of 45 metres, these over 70-year old vines are rooted in clay-limestone soil with outcrops of the bedrock.
These “old vines”, whose vegetation cycle is particularly long, offer us small yields, whatever the year, with small bunches of grapes on red stalks… pure caviar!

With its great age, this is a plot that deserves (and demands) respect whenever its juices are tasted, and this has been the case for over 15 years.
A plot and a wine with the power to dominate!

To preserve all the authenticity of these grapes, whose quality is closely linked to that of the vines (some non-grafted), we vinify with manual cap punching in open 20-hectolitre tanks. After running off and pressing, we keep these batches separate for malolactic fermentation and maturing in barrels.
The wine is matured for 14 to 16 months in French oak barrels, strictly selected from 6 to 8 different coopers. Year after year, we refine our selection to obtain the best possible combination of origin of the timber and level of heating.

Then the wine is carefully monitored and regularly tasted while it is maturing to ensure the UNIQUE style of this limestone Merlot is preserved.

Quintessence, as its name suggests, is a complex, intense, meaty wine, but also equally refined and subtle, very often recognised for its floral or even liquorice notes…
